Bi-material frames

Eyeglass designers like Hakino often rely on combinations of materials for an exciting, elegant look; wooden glasses are no exception, and designers often insert other materials into the structure of their wooden glasses.

The Breton brand Koad makes glasses out of laminated wood, and also inserts a thin layer of fiberglass between layers. The fiberglass, invisible, weighs almost nothing and increases the strength of the frames.

Tree Spectacles, the Tyrolean brand, uses carbon in a similar way. The brand holds together the different sheets of wood with a fine carbon blade. Undetectable, it does not weigh down the wooden glasses, and makes them much stronger.

W-Eye mixes seven layers of wood and two layers of aluminum, both to reinforce the structure of his wooden glasses and to offer them an unusual lightness: each pair weighs only about 10 grams! Malleable, the frames are bent cold and their manufacture consumes very little energy. Don’t worry: once molded and treated (non-toxically), the frames do not deform.
